Mentors of Conroe High School
For all you who flew to Chicago to see the Texans play the Bears, I apologize. For those of you who have no idea what I'm referring to, never mind. Some things are best left alone. Meanwhile, dijano that Conroe ISD has a mentoring program where folks like you and me are paired with a youngster who needs and values some adult attention. Not playing favorites. Other school systems may have similar programs, but Conroe's is the one I know most about and, therefore, the subject of this article. The kids are all ages, from grade school to senior high, and each has a unique history. All have sought to be part of the program because they hunger for some guidance, some loving, someone to talk to, someone to listen to them, someone to care, someone to offer a deserved compliment, someone to help build their confidence and sense of self worth and, most important, to just be there for them.
The time commitment is fairly trivial. It's a 30-45 minute lunch once a week at the kid's school. There's no curriculum, no books, no report card. Just you and your kid in a room with other mentors and mentees, talking (if you're lucky) and listening. You're a port in their storm, but you aren't taking these kids to raise. Just being there makes an enormous difference in their world.
Bentwater residents generously give of their energy and money in supporting their individual causes of choice and, sometimes, it's because someone you know has been afflicted by some malady that has raised your awareness and motivated you to action. But, the money you raise often goes to an organization to help those you never see and never know. The biggest differences here are that you're contributing your time rather than money, and the person receiving your contribution has a face you see and a name you know. With the new school year, many mentors are reengaging with their kids from last year. But there's a waiting list of kids who would welcome your attention.
So, if you have time in your day and room in your heart, I'd invite you to take a closer look to see if this might be right for you. If you'd like more information, just drop me an email. I'll be happy to connect you with the experts.
